11 reportedly killed in fresh attack on Benue community

At least 11 people have been killed in an attack by unidentified gunmen on communities in Nyiev-ya, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State. The attack reportedly occurred on December 25, as residents were celebrating Christmas with their families.

A local resident, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the incident to reporters on Thursday, stating that they received a distress message about the invasion of Nyiev-ya. According to the resident, the attackers targeted areas such as Ubutu and GSS Anwase, killing residents and burning houses. Among the victims was a young boy identified as the son of Daniel Jam. The resident called for urgent intervention from both God and the government.

Simultaneously, reports emerged of another attack in Tse Azege community and Ityuluv within Nyiev-ya. A resident urged the local government and authorities to act swiftly, as the situation remained dire. According to him, the attackers, believed to be armed herdsmen, continued their assault into December 26.

The President General of Mzough U Tiv Worldwide, Iorbee Ihagh, who hails from the affected area, confirmed the attack and described it as unprovoked. He reported that 11 people were killed during the Christmas Day violence, with several others still missing. Ihagh said the local leaders had filed reports with the police.

Solomon Amande, another resident of the affected communities, also confirmed the death toll and attributed the killings to armed herdsmen and militia groups. He lamented the persistent onslaught against his people, calling for urgent action.

When contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Sewuese Anene, stated that she had no official information on the incident at the time of reporting.
