The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the recovery of 22 bodies following the tragic boat accident that occurred on the night of November 28, 2024, between the Baro and Akwanu communities in the Agaie Local Government Area of Niger State.
In a statement issued by the agency’s Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, it was revealed that the boat, which was en route from Ebe Community in Kogi State to Katcha market, capsized with nearly 50 passengers onboard. The incident took place around 2:00 am.
As of the latest update, eight survivors have been rescued, with emergency operations continuing in the affected area. Arah praised the swift action of local community volunteers, divers, and the Agaie Local Government Emergency Committee, who have been working tirelessly in the search and rescue efforts.
Out of the 22 bodies recovered, 18 were identified as residents of Kogi State, while the remaining four were from the Akwanu community in Agaie. The rescue team is still actively searching for additional survivors.
