73 Dead in Tragic Tanker Explosion on Abuja-Kaduna Expressway

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that 73 people lost their lives in a devastating tanker explosion at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State on Saturday.

Initial reports indicated that a truck loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, lost control and caught fire, claiming at least 50 lives. However, a statement released on Sunday by Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi revealed that the death toll has risen to 73.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the number of casualties may still increase as several individuals with critical injuries are receiving medical attention.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun extended his condolences to the government and residents of Niger State, expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives. The IGP emphasized the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols to prevent such catastrophic incidents.

In response, the IGP directed all State Commissioners of Police to enhance the activities of their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) in collaboration with other traffic management agencies. He called for strict enforcement of traffic regulations to improve safety on highways.

The IGP also urged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to comply with traffic rules to avoid further tragedies.
