Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), announced over the weekend that the commission has tracked more than 5,000 uncompleted projects since 2019, worth N74 billion. He shared this information after the ICPC and the BudgIT Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen integrity in the execution of publicly funded projects. Aliyu added that the commission had directed contractors involved in these projects to return to the sites and complete the work.
The MoU was signed at the ICPC headquarters on Friday, during a visit by a BudgIT delegation led by its Country Representative, Mr. Gabriel Okeowo. Aliyu expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, emphasizing that it reflects a shared vision between the ICPC and BudgIT Nigeria to ensure that the country’s resources are used appropriately.
He noted that since 2019, the Constituency and Executive Projects Tracking Group (CEPTG) has tracked over 5,000 projects and successfully directed contractors to return to incomplete projects valued at N74 billion. He also stated that the ICPC would continue to hold those responsible for incomplete projects accountable, just as it has done in the past, and that the commission would work with other authorities to address any issues Nigerians report about constituency projects.
Aliyu encouraged Nigerians to follow the work of the CEPTG and monitor their constituency projects by obtaining a copy of the national budget, tracking progress, and holding the government accountable.
Mr. Gabriel Okeowo, the Country Representative of BudgIT, also spoke at the event. He expressed that the MoU highlighted the strong commitment between both organizations, pointing out that certain aspects of the agreement had already been put into action even before the official signing. Okeowo praised the ICPC’s project tracking activities, which are taking place across the country, and explained that the MoU would further strengthen the collaboration. The partnership will be managed through BudgIT’s investigative arm, TRACKA, which will share relevant information and data to help fight fraud in the execution of publicly funded projects.
