Four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have lost their lives following an ambush by Boko Haram insurgents during an inspection tour of national grid installations in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State. The tragic incident occurred on November 18, 2024.
NSCDC spokesperson Babawale Afolabi confirmed the development in a statement, recounting that seven officers of the Corps’ Special Squad had initially been declared missing following the attack. The team was ambushed along the boundary between Niger and Kaduna states. Afolabi revealed that four bodies have since been recovered, two officers returned safely to base, and one remains unaccounted for.
Dr. Ahmed Audi, the NSCDC Commandant General, visited injured personnel at a medical facility on Thursday, praising their bravery and dedication to their duty. He highlighted their sacrifices and pledged full institutional support for both the injured and the families of the deceased.
The ambush occurred as the team, consisting of nine officers and 71 other ranks, was returning from Shiroro after assisting expatriates stranded in the Dagwachi Village area. Over 200 heavily armed insurgents ambushed the convoy from a vantage point, launching a surprise attack with sophisticated weapons. Despite being outnumbered, the NSCDC operatives fought back and reportedly neutralized over 50 insurgents during the engagement.
Dr. Audi expressed condolences to the families of the fallen officers and emphasized the importance of expediting insurance benefits for the affected families. He reiterated the need for collective public efforts to address the rising insecurity, urging citizens to support security agencies in the fight against insurgency.
