The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed an in-depth investigation into the recent boat accident in Kogi State. Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed in a statement on Saturday that the Force Marine Officer will lead the probe to determine the causes of the mishap.
The investigation aims to identify factors contributing to the tragedy and develop strategies to prevent similar incidents on the country’s waterways. Additionally, it will provide recommendations for enhancing safety measures and emergency response systems for water transport nationwide.
The IGP extended his condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Kogi State. He assured them of the police’s commitment to ensuring the swift rescue of missing passengers, noting that resources and operational plans have been activated to intensify search and rescue operations.
Egbetokun also called on waterway operators, boat owners, and stakeholders to collaborate with the Force Marine Department to adopt and enforce critical safety measures to protect passengers and operators.
Meanwhile, authorities have confirmed the rescue of at least 20 persons and the recovery of eight bodies from the accident, which occurred along the Dembo-Ebuchi section of the River Niger in Niger State. The chairman of Katcha Local Government Area, Abdullahi Saku, revealed during an assessment visit that the ill-fated boat was carrying over 200 passengers, primarily artisans and traders, when the accident took place.
