Over 200 pubs and bars across Australia, including at least 90 in Queensland, will not host Australia Day celebrations in 2025. This decision, made by the Australian Venue Co, the nation’s second-largest pub group, reflects concerns that the day brings sadness and hurt to some patrons.
Managers have been informed that there will be no acknowledgment of the holiday at their venues.
The decision has drawn criticism, with Peter Fegan expressing frustration on 4BC Breakfast, saying, “I am so sick and tired of big corporations setting the moral compass.”
Warren Mundine also shared his perspective, emphasizing the significance of the day for all Australians. Speaking on 4BC Breakfast, he said, “It’s not about anyone else; it’s about Australians, it’s about Australia.” Mundine highlighted the contributions of post-World War II immigrants and Indigenous Australians in building the nation, adding, “That’s what we should be celebrating.”
