Kano Pillars midfielder Rabiu Ali and 29 other home-based players have been invited to the Super Eagles B camp by interim coach Austin Eguavoen as preparations intensify for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers against Ghana.
This invitation marks the third phase of camping for the players, following two earlier sessions organized by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Abuja.
Ali, 44, who has scored eight goals in the ongoing 2024/25 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season, leads the squad alongside notable names like Remo Stars goalkeeper Kayode Bankole, Rivers United defender Steven Mayo, Abia Warriors forward Sunday Megwo, and NPFL top scorer Anas Yusuf.
The players are scheduled to report to camp at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
The qualifiers’ first leg will be played in Accra on Sunday, December 22, while the return leg is set for Saturday, December 28, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. The double-header is critical for Nigeria’s qualification for the 2024 CHAN tournament, which is reserved exclusively for players competing in domestic leagues.
The squad also includes Enyimba FC goalkeeper Henry Ozoemena, Remo Stars wing-back Ismail Sadiq, Enugu Rangers midfielder Kazeem Ogunleye, and Nasarawa United defender Victor Collins, who recently featured in Nigeria’s 2025 AFCON qualifying matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
The eighth edition of CHAN will take place in February 2025 across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Historically, Ghana has been a formidable opponent, denying Nigeria a CHAN finals spot in 2009 and 2023.
In the 2009 qualifiers, Nigeria squandered a 2-0 first-half lead in Accra, eventually losing 3-2, while the return leg ended 0-0. For the 2023 edition, Ghana won 2-0 at home but lost by the same margin in Abuja before advancing via a penalty shootout at the MKO Abiola National Stadium.
