Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to appoint one of their members as a minister to promote inclusion and representation at the highest levels of governance.
They also urged Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and local government council chairmen to appoint PWDs as commissioners and supervisory councillors.
The appeal was made by the Plateau State Chairman for Persons with Disabilities, Shindol Aaron Adamu, during a press briefing in Jos to mark the 2024 International Day for Persons with Disabilities. This year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future,” highlights the need for a more equitable society.
Adamu emphasized that the theme underscores the importance of creating a society where everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to thrive. He called on all levels of government to enforce disability laws and implement policies prioritizing accessibility, education, healthcare, and economic inclusion.
“We urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors, legislators, and local government chairmen across the country to introduce measures that promote inclusivity. This includes establishing advisory councils or committees led by persons with disabilities to shape policies and programs,” he said.
Adamu also stressed the need for investments in capacity building, such as training, scholarships, and leadership development programs designed specifically for PWDs. He further called for partnerships with private sector stakeholders to create employment opportunities through inclusive hiring practices.
“As we mark this significant day, we must reflect on our shared responsibility to amplify the leadership of persons with disabilities,” Adamu added. “By doing so, we honour their resilience and work towards building a Plateau State and Nigeria where inclusivity and sustainability are integral to our development agenda.”
