Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur, and over 100 passengers narrowly avoided tragedy when a Max Air aircraft suffered an engine fire shortly after takeoff from Maiduguri International Airport.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the flight to Abuja encountered engine failure caused by a bird strike approximately 10 minutes into the journey. The pilot successfully executed an emergency landing back at Maiduguri Airport, ensuring the safety of all onboard.
A Max Air representative, speaking anonymously, confirmed the incident, stating:
“Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft struck a bird mid-air, leading to one of the engines catching fire. The pilot’s swift response ensured the passengers’ safety.”
The emergency landing left passengers shaken, with many opting to retrieve their belongings and return home rather than continue the trip. For those willing to proceed, Max Air swiftly dispatched a replacement aircraft from Kano, which safely transported the Deputy Governor and other passengers to Abuja.
The damaged aircraft is currently grounded at Maiduguri International Airport and undergoing repairs. Investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.
Airport authorities have reassured travelers of their commitment to safety and commended the crew for their professionalism in handling the emergency.
