Max Air breaks silence on aircraft mishap, Confirms Safe Landing of passengers

Nigerian airline Max Air has clarified the circumstances surrounding the air return of its Flight VM1623, with registration number 5N-BBM, to Maiduguri International Airport on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

The flight, which was en route to Abuja, experienced an engine abnormality reportedly caused by a bird strike approximately 10 minutes after takeoff. Among the over 100 passengers onboard was the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Umar Kadafur.

In a statement released on Thursday, Max Air assured that all passengers and crew members were unharmed. The airline explained that the captain promptly initiated an air return after detecting irregular engine parameters.

“As part of our Standard Operational Procedures, the affected engine was shut down as a precaution, allowing the aircraft to safely return to the airport,” the statement read.

Max Air extended its apologies to passengers for any inconvenience and expressed gratitude for their patience and understanding during the incident.

To minimize disruptions, the airline dispatched a rescue aircraft to Maiduguri, ensuring passengers continued their journey with minimal delay.

The airline further stated:
“Max Air is deeply committed to the safety and comfort of our passengers. We are collaborating with aviation authorities to investigate the cause of the engine abnormality and take measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

“As one of Nigeria’s leading airlines, we remain dedicated to upholding the highest safety and operational standards to maintain the trust and confidence of our valued customers.”
