The Gombe State government has finalized plans to implement a bill designed to safeguard the rights and welfare of persons living with disabilities (PLWDs)
The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Asma’u Mohammad Iganus, announced the initiative during a sensitization rally held in Yalmatu-Deba Local Government Area on Tuesday to mark World Disability Day.
She emphasized the administration’s dedication to promoting inclusivity, revealing that the disability bill has been drafted and submitted to the Gombe State House of Assembly for approval.
“Once enacted, this law will establish a robust legal framework to protect and promote the rights of persons living with disabilities in the state,” Iganus said.
The commissioner reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that no one is excluded from its development agenda.
“This proposed law reflects our unwavering commitment to inclusivity and social justice, aligning with global standards for disability rights,” she added.
Iganus highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to actively involve PLWDs in governance and programs, ensuring they are not left behind.
The rally brought together advocacy groups and stakeholders who praised the government’s initiative. They called for the swift passage and implementation of the bill to address the challenges faced by PLWDs in the state.
If approved, the disability bill is expected to significantly enhance accessibility, eliminate discrimination, and improve access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and employment for PLWDs. This legislation aims to foster a more inclusive society in Gombe State, ensuring equal opportunities for all its residents.
