Gunmen Attack Police Checkpoint in Anambra, Two officers Injured, two cars burnt

Unidentified gunmen have launched an attack on a police checkpoint in Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving two security operatives injured.

The incident, which occurred on Thursday, was confirmed by the state police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement released on Friday.

Ikenga revealed that a police officer and a member of the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG) sustained gunshot injuries during a shootout with the attackers. Both are currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital.

“During the gun duel, one police personnel and one AVG operative sustained gunshot injuries and are responding to treatment. Unfortunately, two operational vehicles belonging to the vigilante group were completely destroyed in a fire,” Ikenga stated.

The gunmen were intercepted on the Umuchu-Amesi-Uga Road, where security forces engaged them in a firefight. A branded blue Hilux vehicle, suspected to have been stolen from a civilian, was recovered during the operation.

Ikenga assured the public that joint security operations are ongoing in the area, and updates will be provided as investigations progress.

This attack is the latest in a string of violent incidents in Anambra and other Southeast states, including Abia, Imo, Enugu, and Ebonyi. Many of these assaults have been attributed to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Security forces have intensified efforts to restore peace and stability in the region amidst escalating tensions and frequent attacks on law enforcement agencies.
