A fatal accident on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos has left one person dead and five others injured. The incident occurred on Monday morning, just a day after three people lost their lives in another crash at the Ita Oluwo area of Ikorodu.
Confirming the accident, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), stated that the crash involved a J5 Ford bus (FKJ 724 YC) and a Mercedes truck (FKJ 746 YC). The incident occurred at Ilubirin, inward Sura, on the bridge.
According to Bakare-Oki, the crash claimed one life and resulted in five injuries. LASTMA officials, along with bystanders, swiftly carried out a rescue operation, extricating four victims from the wreckage. Three of the victims were rescued alive, but tragically, one person—who had been trapped in the J5 Ford bus filled with pepper and other perishable goods—succumbed to their injuries.
Preliminary reports indicate that the accident was caused by brake failure in the J5 Ford bus, which was reportedly traveling at high speed before colliding with the Mercedes truck.
Emergency response teams, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit (LRU), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force, and LASAMBUS, worked alongside LASTMA to manage the situation. The survivors were quickly transported to the General Hospital on Lagos Island for treatment.
To restore traffic flow, LASTMA’s rescue team efficiently cleared the accident scene, removing the vehicles and spilled goods. Bakare-Oki urged drivers, particularly those operating heavy-duty vehicles, to avoid speeding and ensure their vehicles, especially braking systems, are properly maintained before embarking on any journey.
