Vice-President Kashim Shettima has assured that the Federal Government will extend support to families affected by recent stampedes across the country.
In a condolence message delivered on Sunday in Abuja, Shettima expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incidents, offering prayers and sympathies to grieving families.
On Saturday in Okija, Anambra State, a Christmas palliative distribution event ended in tragedy as a stampede claimed 22 lives. The same day, in Abuja, ten individuals lost their lives during an annual Christmas food-sharing event at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama. Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, approximately 35 children lost their lives, and others sustained injuries during a holiday funfair at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.
Describing the incidents as a national tragedy, Shettima revealed that the Federal Government had directed relevant agencies to provide immediate assistance to affected families. He lamented the loss of innocent lives, particularly children, and emphasized that proper planning and organization could have prevented such devastating occurrences.
“My prayers and thoughts are with the grieving families of all victims, including those who sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment,” Shettima stated. He expressed particular sadness over the loss of so many young lives, underscoring the need for measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
The vice-president prayed for eternal rest for the departed souls and pledged that the government would stand by the bereaved families during this difficult time, ensuring they receive the necessary support.
