The Nigerian government has confirmed that December salaries for federal workers were disbursed starting Monday, December 23, 2024, ensuring payments during this year’s festive season.
Mr. Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General, revealed this on Tuesday while addressing concerns over alleged delays in workers’ usalaries. According to Mokwa, “They [the government] have started paying since yesterday.”
Responding to inquiries about the delayed November salaries, Mokwa attributed the issue to shortfalls caused by the implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage. He assured that the matter had been resolved, with payments made accordingly. “Last month, some people didn’t get their salaries on time due to shortfalls in some ministries. These shortfalls were augmented, and payments have been completed. It now depends on the banks, as how quickly the funds drop varies from bank to bank,” he stated.
Despite the assurances, some federal workers in the Federal Capital Territory have expressed frustration over the salary delays, which they say affected their holiday plans. A civil servant, speaking anonymously, lamented, “The salary delay is unfortunate. It has made this year’s Christmas difficult for me and my family. We couldn’t travel due to the delays.”
The situation highlights the challenges surrounding payroll management during the festive season, despite the government’s efforts to address payment issues promptly.
