Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has alleged that Afrobeat star Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, is responsible for the recent arrest and police harassment of musician Darlington Okoye, widely known as Speed Darlington or “Akpi.”
Adeyanju, in a social media post, criticized Burna Boy for allegedly using his influence to target Speed Darlington, contrasting this with the artist’s history of creating music that condemns oppression. “Burna Boy behind harassment of Speed Darlington by the police. This is someone who has been singing against oppression and forming junior Fela, now oppressing Akpi,” he wrote.
Speed Darlington was reportedly arrested in Owerri, Imo State, during a show upon his return to Nigeria. Although initial reasons for the arrest were unclear, SaharaReporters revealed that the Nigerian police detained him over allegations of cyberstalking Burna Boy.
Darlington was said to have been held at the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team detention center in Abuja after being moved around several police formations in Lagos. Adeyanju, who visited Darlington in detention, confirmed that the arrest was linked to a petition filed by Burna Boy, accusing Speed Darlington of cyberstalking.
Speaking on the matter, Adeyanju argued there was insufficient evidence in the petition to justify Darlington’s detention. “I have met Speed Darlington, and he’s in good spirits. We are working to get him released on bail as soon as possible,” the lawyer stated.
While Adeyanju was denied a physical copy of the petition, he was allowed to review its content. The police, however, have yet to clarify further details of the case.
The arrest has sparked mixed reactions, with critics questioning Burna Boy’s actions in light of his public stance against oppression, as reflected in his music. Adeyanju has pledged to continue advocating for Darlington’s release.
