Afenifere leaders Visit Dele Farotimi in prison

Leaders of the Yoruba sociopolitical group, Afenifere, visited lawyer and author, Dele Farotimi, at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre on Friday.

The visit was to convey a private message from the group’s national leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, and to check on Farotimi’s wellbeing.

Farotimi, a member of Afenifere’s national caucus, is being held in custody over allegations of defaming Chief Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD).

In a statement issued by Afenifere’s Deputy Secretary General, Alade Rotimi-John, the group expressed disappointment over what it described as a “travesty of justice.” The statement criticized the presiding chief magistrate for refusing to promptly address Farotimi’s bail application for what is considered a bailable offense.

“Afenifere finds it deeply disturbing that Mr. Farotimi is being remanded in a correctional facility for a matter that should not warrant such harsh measures.

The group will wait for the chief magistrate’s ruling on December 20 before determining its next course of action,” the statement read.

Those present at the visit included notable Afenifere leaders such as Chief Supo Shonibare, Basorun Segun Sanni, Mrs. Nike Olujembola, Mrs. Toyin Falade, Pastor Olayemi Olajuyinnu, and Mr. Tunde Babarinde, among others.
