A tragic stampede at a carnival in the Bashorun area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has reportedly claimed the lives of several children.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, though many parents and children had arrived at the venue a day earlier in anticipation of the event. The rush to gain access to the carnival venue resulted in a chaotic stampede, leaving many feared dead and others injured.
The exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed at the time of this report, but it was learned that victims were rushed to various hospitals across Ibadan for medical treatment.
Efforts by DAILY POST to get a statement from the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Adewale Osifeso, were unsuccessful. However, the Oyo State Government has confirmed the incident through a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.
Government’s Reaction
Oyelade described the incident as a tragedy, stating, “A stampede occurred at a private children’s funfair held at Basorun Islamic High School, resulting in the loss of lives, mostly children, and leaving others injured.”
He added that the state government had swiftly mobilized a rapid response team to address the situation, ensuring that affected individuals received immediate medical attention.
