Customs officer assaulting man in viral video arrested

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has apprehended two personnel from its Seme Command following their alleged involvement in assaulting members of the public, an incident captured in a viral video.

Comptroller Kayode Kolade of the Seme Area Command disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing in Seme, explaining that their arrest was based on preliminary investigations.

The viral footage, which surfaced on Sunday, showed two residents being brutalized by customs officers at a checkpoint along the Badagry-Seme expressway. Reports suggest the victims were accused of recording videos and suspected of being informants providing journalists with details about smuggling activities on the route.

The command had announced on Monday that it had commenced an investigation into the incident. Providing an update on Tuesday, Comptroller Kolade confirmed that the two officers would be handed over to the Customs Police Unit for further inquiry.

He emphasized that the officers’ behavior does not align with the professional standards upheld by the service, particularly at a time when the NCS is focused on maintaining high levels of integrity and professionalism among its ranks.

The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, strongly condemned the officers’ actions, describing their conduct as unethical. He has directed that the implicated personnel be transferred to the NCS Headquarters, where a full-scale investigation and appropriate disciplinary actions will follow.
