Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has accused Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the party’s National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, of aligning with the agenda of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, Adeyanju alleged that Damagum regularly visits Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and accused Anyanwu of playing a similar role in fostering these connections.
He further claimed that Tinubu has strategically infiltrated the PDP, planning to influence its presidential candidacy for the 2027 elections.
According to Adeyanju, “The current PDP is in Wike’s pocket at the national level. He installed the acting PDP National Chairman, who serves tea in Femi Gbajabiamila’s house. Meanwhile, the PDP’s National Secretary, Sam Anyanwu, is in the kitchen serving Kilishi. These are Tinubu’s moles in the PDP, just like Abure in the Labour Party.”
Adeyanju alleged that these dynamics have crippled the PDP’s ability to function as an opposition party. “There is no opposition anymore. Who is challenging the system? The PDP is effectively in bed with the APC,” he remarked, citing instances where the PDP failed to convene its National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings independently.
He also criticized Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, Damagum, and Anyanwu for allegedly aligning with Tinubu’s long-term strategy. “Tinubu is a master of crushing opposition.
For years in Lagos, he anointed candidates to run opposition parties and rendered them useless. He’s applying the same playbook nationally by installing his preferred candidates within PDP leadership.”
Adeyanju expressed concern over the state of political opposition in Nigeria, emphasizing that the perceived collaboration between PDP leadership and the APC undermines democratic accountability. He lamented that ordinary Nigerians, disillusioned by institutions and opposition parties, now turn to individual activists for support.
