Nigerian Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has claimed there is a plot to cancel his highly anticipated December concert in Nigeria. He linked the alleged plan to backlash over his remarks about the state of Nigeria’s economy.
During an appearance on the American podcast Big Homies House, Davido had advised Americans against relocating to Africa, specifically Nigeria, describing the country’s economy as being in “shambles.” His comments sparked a heated debate, drawing criticism from Nigerians at home and abroad.
Prominent voices, including Joe Igbokwe and Reno Omokri, condemned the remarks, accusing Davido of tarnishing Nigeria’s image on the global stage. In response, the artist defended his stance, asserting that entertainers like him are the true ambassadors of the country.
He took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the backlash, posting, “Y’all mad ‘cause we the real ambassadors!”
The controversy appears to have escalated, with Davido alleging threats to cancel his upcoming Lagos concert. He tweeted, “Dem say dem go cancel my show cus of my interview … loooool I don’t have to perform in Nigeria.”
Despite the uproar, Davido remains one of Nigeria’s most celebrated artists, known for his global influence and contributions to Afrobeats. His December concert was highly anticipated by fans nationwide.
