Tope Temokun, the lawyer representing Dele Farotimi, has dismissed claims that his client sent Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to beg legal icon Afe Babalola, SAN, on his behalf.
Farotimi, a human rights lawyer, is currently in detention over allegations of defamation leveled against him by Afe Babalola and other prominent figures. He was arrested by the Nigerian Police following a petition and remains in custody pending the hearing of his bail application, which has been adjourned to December 20, 2024.
During Farotimi’s detention, Peter Obi visited Afe Babalola in Ado-Ekiti, reportedly to plead on behalf of Farotimi, urging the elder statesman to consider the lawyer’s circumstances.
Speaking through his lawyer, Temokun, Farotimi refuted claims that he had authorized anyone, including Peter Obi, to appeal to Babalola on his behalf. According to Temokun, Farotimi remains confident in his ability to overcome the charges against him and has not compromised his principles.
“He categorically told me that anyone familiar with his history, principles, and philosophy would know he would never send anyone to beg on his behalf,” Temokun stated.
Farotimi further emphasized his disappointment with anyone who might believe such claims, saying:
“He told me, ‘Even you, Tope, if you join anyone in believing that I could send someone to beg, I would be deeply disappointed in you.’”
Temokun noted that Farotimi is in high spirits despite his legal challenges and remains resolute in his fight to clear his name. Farotimi believes his case will serve as a testament to his commitment to justice and his steadfast adherence to his principles.
Farotimi’s legal troubles stem from a defamation claim involving his published book, which has been in circulation for some time. The matter has drawn significant public attention, with many questioning the broader implications of the charges on freedom of expression.
Farotimi’s strong stance against seeking clemency highlights his determination to confront the charges head-on, maintaining his reputation as a principled advocate for justice.
