The Nigerian police have released Bolaji Idowu, Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Center (HICC), following interventions from prominent clerics and influential figures connected to the Aso Rock Villa.
METROBLOG had reported that Pastor Idowu was detained by the Nigerian police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja over allegations of a ₦1.5 billion fraud.
According to SaharaReporters, the pastor was released late Tuesday after pressure was reportedly mounted by high-ranking pastors and individuals close to President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Sources disclosed that Pastor Idowu has been directed to repay the funds allegedly traced to his accounts within two weeks.
The allegations stem from a real estate scheme involving a member of Idowu’s church leadership. Investigations revealed that billions of naira from the fraudulent activities were first funneled into the church’s account and later transferred to the pastor’s personal account.
Initially, the FCID detained Pastor Idowu overnight for questioning as part of an ongoing probe into alleged real estate fraud and money laundering. A senior police source confirmed the detention and added, “The case originated from complaints against one of Pastor Bolaji’s subordinates, who defrauded several individuals.”
Idowu, widely recognized for his “Next Level Prayers” program, founded HICC in December 2003. The church has since grown significantly, with locations across Nigeria, the UK, and the US, attracting over 70,000 worshippers both online and onsite.
While Pastor Idowu’s release has sparked mixed reactions, the directive to refund the traced funds adds another layer to the unfolding case. The police investigation remains active as authorities work to untangle the full extent of the alleged scheme.
