Senator Orji Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, revealed that Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), once threatened him for not supporting the Biafra agitation.
Speaking during an interview with Arise Television, Kalu explained that he chose to ignore the threats, focusing instead on his commitment to ensuring security and order.
According to Kalu, effective security relies heavily on intelligence, and leaders must take a firm stance against crime. “Simon Ekpa was calling and threatening me because I don’t support Biafra, but I left him to his conscience. I am very strong-willed when it comes to security, and I can do anything to safeguard the lives and property of the people I serve. You must be a strong leader to condemn crime, and I eradicated crime. No governor should tolerate any type of crime in their state; it is not allowed,” he said.
He also called on southeastern governors to adopt a resolute and uncompromising approach in addressing the activities of non-state actors in the region.
Simon Ekpa, a controversial pro-Biafra agitator, was arrested by Finnish police on November 21 for allegedly spreading terrorist propaganda on social media. Following his arrest, a Finnish district court ordered his detention and set May 2025 as the deadline for the prosecution to file charges against him.
