Kaduna-based activist and political commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) following the release of a controversial viral video.
The video, which has since been deleted, contained outdated footage suggesting that the Nigerian government planned to establish a French military base in the Northwest region. Despite its removal, the video gained widespread attention online, sparking national security concerns.
Sources revealed that Shehu is currently in DSS custody in Kaduna and may soon face court proceedings. While the DSS has yet to issue an official statement, they have reportedly assured that Shehu’s rights will be upheld during his detention.
Speaking with SaharaReporters, Shehu’s lawyer, Mustapha Abubakar, confirmed the arrest through Shehu’s family. However, Abubakar stated that he could not provide further details as he was not in Kaduna at the time of the incident.
This isn’t the first time Shehu has faced legal troubles. In February, he was arrested and detained in Abuja following a petition from the law office of former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN).
A source close to Shehu revealed that the February arrest stemmed from allegations brought forward by Malami and his family. The petition, reportedly issued on the letterhead of Malami’s law office, led to Shehu’s detention by the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Abubakar previously suggested that Shehu’s arrests could be linked to attempts by Malami and other members of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to suppress Shehu for demanding accountability.
As the DSS moves forward with the current case, the situation continues to unfold.
