Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has fulfilled his inaugural promise by approving the swearing-in of three High Court judges-designate who were not sworn in by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
The judges, Ojo Maureen Osa, Godwin Jeff Okundamiya, and Edoghogho Eboigbe, were among eight judges cleared by the National Judicial Council in June 2023.
Following his inauguration on November 12, 2024, Governor Okpebholo directed the Chief Judge of the state, Daniel Okungbowa, to investigate the reasons behind the delay in the swearing-in of these three judges.
A statement from the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Umar Ikhilor, confirmed that the three judges would be sworn in on December 2, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at the State Executive Council Chambers in Benin City.
Ikhilor emphasized that the governor’s decision reflects his commitment to upholding the rule of law, respecting the separation of powers, and reinforcing the judiciary’s role in ensuring justice and fairness.
This move follows the action of the previous governor, who had sworn in five of the eight judges in May 2024, leaving the remaining three unappointed.
