Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after voluntarily appearing at its Abuja headquarters on Tuesday. The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed his detention, stating that the commission’s chief security officer oversaw the arrest when the ex governor Bello, surrendered himself earlier today.
Bello arrived at the EFCC office in the morning, accompanied by his legal team, to address allegations of financial misappropriation after months of ignoring repeated invitations from the commission. However, unlike his earlier visit to the EFCC, where he was joined by his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, this time he was not accompanied by Ododo.
The EFCC had declared Bello wanted on April 18, 2024, in connection with an N80.2 billion money laundering case. His detention marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation into his tenure as governor.
