Ekiti High Court Grants Dele Farotimi Bail

Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has been granted bail by the Ekiti State High Court following his recent arrest.

The court set bail at N50 million, with a surety required to provide the same amount. The surety must also own a landed property. The matter was adjourned to January 29, 2025, for further proceedings.

Farotimi’s legal troubles began after being accused of defamation by Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, over statements in his book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System. The 95-year-old legal luminary claimed the publication contained defamatory content, leading to Farotimi’s arrest by operatives of the Ekiti State Police Command.

The arrest provoked widespread condemnation, with civil society organizations and the Nigerian Bar Association demanding Farotimi’s immediate release, citing concerns over free speech and judicial fairness.
