The Nigerian government has announced that the minimum wage will now be reviewed every two years, instead of the previous five-year interval.
Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, made this announcement on Thursday in Abia State. She said the decision aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s promise to review the minimum wage after three years.
“We won’t let the minimum wage review take forever,” Onyejeocha stated. “It used to be every five years, but now, in less than two years, we will review it again.”
This move follows calls from the Trade Union Congress for a yearly review to keep up with economic changes like rising inflation.
Last year, President Tinubu approved a minimum wage of N70,000, with a plan to review it every three years. However, Nigeria’s inflation rate, which reached 34.60 percent in November 2024, has put pressure on the wage increase.
