The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) has confirmed the release of its founder, Fisayo Soyombo, who was detained by the Nigerian Army for three days in Port Harcourt.
Soyombo, along with others, was arrested at a site the military identified as being involved in illegal oil bunkering. However, FIJ has described the Army’s claim as a deliberate mischaracterization of Soyombo’s activities as a journalist.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday evening, FIJ announced the release:
“We can confirm that our founder, @fisayosoyombo, has now been released by @HQNigerianArmy, following the intense media campaign you all mounted,” the statement read.
The organization criticized the Army’s characterization of Soyombo’s involvement and assured the public it would address the matter appropriately.
“Our immediate concern is Fisayo Soyombo’s safety, considering the extensive information he shared with the Army during his detention as part of his investigative work. We are evaluating the situation to ensure his safety is not compromised after release.”
The development comes amid widespread advocacy for Soyombo’s freedom and increased scrutiny of press freedom in Nigeria.
