Fire Razes INEC Office in Delta State, Destroys Election Materials worth millions

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed a fire outbreak at its office in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, resulting in significant damage to election materials.

In a statement shared on its official X handle on Tuesday, INEC revealed that the fire destroyed 706 ballot boxes, 50 election bags, 322 apron vests, and several other items. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Delta State, Mr. Etekamba Udo Umoren, attributed the incident to a sudden power surge following the restoration of power on Monday afternoon.

The affected section housed petrol generators and other critical items, which were completely razed. Among the damaged items were three electric power generators, 140 stamps, 50 ballot box seals, and various election-related supplies, including envelopes, posters, forms, and booklets.

Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported. INEC noted that the incident had been reported to security agencies and emergency services for a comprehensive investigation.

The Commission also expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Police Force and the Delta State Fire Service for their swift response in containing the situation.
