The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly recovered 753 duplexes in Abuja, tied to an unnamed former government official.
While the anti-graft agency EFCC has failed to reveal the identity of the former government official, allegations have surfaced on social media implicating Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as the individual behind this staggering forfeiture.
The development has intensified scrutiny on Emefiele, who is already embroiled in a high-profile trial involving allegations of financial embezzlement and fraud during his tenure.
Emefiele, along with his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, is facing 26 counts of financial misconduct, including abuse of office and alleged embezzlement of $4.5 billion and ₦2.8 billion. The accusations have raised serious concerns about his stewardship of the nation’s apex bank.
During a recent hearing at the Lagos Special Offences Court in Ikeja, a former executive assistant to Emefiele, John Adetola, testified that he personally handed over $400,000 in cash to the embattled former governor. This testimony, presented before Justice Rahman Oshodi, has fueled public outcry and demands for accountability.
METROBLOG had reported the recovery of the 753 duplexes in Abuja by EFCC which has further inflamed public sentiment, with many Nigerians expressing frustration over the EFCC’s decision to withhold the identity of the alleged government official involved.
Prominent voices like Omoyele Sowore, a former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, have criticized the anti-graft agency for what they see as a lack of transparency. Sowore’s statements underscore growing concerns about whether justice will be fully served in this case.
The controversy has also drawn the attention of influential journalists and commentators.
Agba Jalingo, a respected Nigerian journalist, took to social media to highlight the magnitude of the scandal. In a sharp critique, Jalingo wrote,
“This is the King James Version of Emefiele
What is the average cost of constructing a duplex in Abuja?
Multiply it by 753 and write the answer in the comment section.
Or let’s say, what’s the cost of renting a duplex in Lokogoma?
Man of God, habaaaaaa!”
The ongoing trial and asset recovery have sparked debates among Nigerians, with many questioning how such massive wealth accumulation could go unnoticed for so long. The case has also renewed calls for comprehensive reforms in public office accountability and asset declaration processes.
While the EFCC has remained tight-lipped about the identity of the implicated official, mounting evidence and public testimonies continue to point fingers at Emefiele.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the nation waits to see if justice will be served and whether the anti-graft agency can restore public trust by ensuring that no individual is above the law.
This unfolding saga has become a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against corruption, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change in governance and financial oversight.
