Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter Dies at 100

Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, has passed away at the age of 100 in Plains, Georgia. The Carter Center confirmed his death in a brief statement on Sunday.

Carter had been receiving hospice care at his home in Plains since February. His passing comes just over a month after the death of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who died on November 19 at the age of 96. Carter, who attended her memorial service in a wheelchair, was deeply admired for his decades of public service.

A U.S. Naval Academy graduate and a member of a farming family in Georgia, Carter served as a state senator and governor before narrowly defeating Gerald Ford in the 1976 presidential election.
