Fubara commissions Residential quarters donated by state government to NAF

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has highlighted the state’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) and the federal government in enhancing the welfare of servicemen.

The governor stated this during the commissioning of two blocks of 12 flats each, comprising two-bedroom NAF prototype residential buildings, at the Port Harcourt NAF Base in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on Monday.

The project, initially launched in 2017, was valued at ₦212 million but later revised to ₦454 million. Governor Fubara emphasized that the initiative demonstrates Rivers State’s dedication to the welfare of Air Force personnel, acknowledging their collaboration with the state in tackling crime and ensuring security.

“This project was not initiated by our administration but was conceived in 2017 and left incomplete. Upon taking office, we recognized its importance and decided to complete it,” Fubara said. “We believe ₦454 million is a small price for the support and security we receive from the Nigerian Air Force.”

The governor noted that welfare support should not be limited to specific communities or individuals but must extend to institutions safeguarding lives and property. “When officers are comfortable, they perform more effectively, ensuring the safety and stability of the state,” he added.

Governor Fubara reaffirmed his administration’s pledge to support security agencies, particularly in the fight against oil theft and pipeline vandalism. He assured that the 115 Special Operations Group Base would receive further upgrades to make it one of the most appealing bases nationwide.

“Our administration will continue to work closely with all security agencies to ensure a safer Rivers State. The welfare and productivity of officers remain a top priority,” the governor said.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, commended the Rivers State Government for prioritizing the welfare of NAF personnel. He said the new facility would boost morale, improve living conditions for NAF families, and enhance the operational efficiency of the force.

“This project underscores the strong partnership between the Nigerian Air Force and the Rivers State Government. It will significantly improve the quality of life for our officers and their families while ensuring we remain operationally effective,” Abubakar stated.

He also acknowledged the state’s support in combating illegal oil bunkering, which has helped secure Rivers’ economic resources. He added that the NAF has reciprocated this support through air operations and services that create a safe environment for businesses to thrive.

Air Commodore Ali H. Idris, Commander of the 115 Special Operations Group, described the facility as a testament to Governor Fubara’s commitment to improving the welfare of security personnel. He highlighted that the project would enhance operational readiness and deepen the collaboration between the NAF and the Rivers State Government in maintaining law and order.

The initiative is part of Rivers State’s broader commitment to fostering security and ensuring that servicemen are adequately equipped to carry out their duties effectively.
