Abia State Governor Alex Otti has clarified that civil servants who failed the recent promotion and confirmation examinations in the state did so due to inadequate preparation.
Speaking on Friday during his December media chat at the Government House, Umuahia, the Governor emphasized that while those who failed the exams would not face dismissal, their promotions would be withheld until they passed the required tests.
“The reality is simple: if you sit for an exam and you probably didn’t prepare very well, the chances are higher that you will fail,” Otti stated. He added that a culture where all candidates pass without merit would no longer be tolerated in the state’s civil service.
Governor Otti also confirmed that those who failed the initial exercise have been given an opportunity to re-sit for the examinations.
Addressing allegations of pension fund theft involving some civil servants, the Governor disclosed that security agencies are investigating the matter, reaffirming his administration’s zero-tolerance policy for corruption and theft of public funds.
Additionally, the Governor announced that he had instructed the Accountant General of Abia State to commence the payment of retirement benefits to disengaged Permanent Secretaries.
On regional security issues, Otti noted that South East governors continue to collaborate on strategies to address insecurity in the region effectively.
