The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has clarified that state governors do not possess the constitutional authority to suspend or remove local government chairmen from office.
Fagbemi made this assertion while speaking to journalists on Wednesday, addressing concerns over the recent actions of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, who had suspended local government chairmen in the state.
According to the AGF, the Nigerian Constitution does not grant governors the legal power to interfere with the tenure of elected local government officials, emphasizing the need for adherence to constitutional provisions to maintain democratic principles.
