A groom-to-be, identified as Bright, was tragically shot dead less than 24 hours before his wedding in Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State.
The victim, in his early 30s, was reportedly on his way to pick up his fiancée, Chinwendu, accompanied by his best man and the chief bridesmaid when the incident occurred.
Bright and his group were traveling back to Uli, within the same local government area, when gunmen intercepted them. The victim’s younger brother recounted that Bright had stopped at Ezego Junction in Ihiala to refuel his motorcycle, while his fiancée and the others rode ahead.
The brother explained, “Bright was following behind the convoy. When his best man and the others reached Abbott Boys Secondary School and realized Bright was not with them, they tried calling his phone, but it was unreachable. The best man retraced his steps and found Bright lying lifeless in a pool of blood at Ezego Junction. He had been shot twice in the head.”
Witnesses reported that two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle had accosted Bright, demanding his possessions, including his motorcycle, phones, and personal belongings. Despite complying with their demands and pleading for his life, the assailants shot him and fled the scene.
One witness described the victim as a kind-hearted individual who was well-loved in the community. “They took everything from him, even the food he was carrying for the evening. Bright begged for his life, telling them he was about to get married, but they still killed him,” the witness lamented.
The incident has left the community in shock and mourning, with many expressing outrage over the senseless act of violence that robbed Bright of his future and the joy of his impending marriage. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement or make arrests in connection with the incident.
