Gunmen Impose N172.7 Million Levy on 25 Zamfara Villages

In a grim development in Zamfara State, gunmen have reportedly levied a total of N172.7 million on 25 villages in the Tsafe West area, leading to the mass displacement of hundreds of residents. The residents, fearing violent reprisals, have fled their homes, abandoning farms and livelihoods.

The armed group, allegedly led by the notorious bandit leader Danisuhu, has also demanded in-kind contributions such as bags of soybeans from the affected communities. According to reports by Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency publication, the bandits have issued threats of brutal attacks against those unable to comply with their demands.

List of Affected Villages

The levies imposed on the villages vary, with Kunchin Kalgo facing the highest demand of N20 million. Other demands include:

  • Gijinzama: N8.5 million
  • Dakolo: N5 million and 20 bags of soybeans
  • Gunja: N7 million
  • Kauyen Kane: N5 million
  • Kurar Mota: N6 million
  • Sungawa and Rakyabu: N15 million each

Widespread Fear and Displacement

A local source described the dire consequences of non-payment: “The inability to pay these levies often results in brutal attacks by the bandits, leaving the residents with no option but to flee.” The source added that hundreds of people have abandoned their homes and farmlands out of fear.

While security improvements have been noted in Tsafe town and the Funtua-Tsafe axis, these gains have not extended to the rural villages in Tsafe West, which remain vulnerable to bandit attacks.

Residents are now pleading for urgent government intervention to address the deteriorating security situation. They call for enhanced military presence and measures to curb the activities of the bandits, who continue to terrorize the region with impunity.
