The website of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has been hacked, the agency confirmed on Wednesday.
In a statement published on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the NBS warned the public to disregard any content posted on its website until it regains full control.
The post read:
“This is to inform the public that the NBS website has been hacked, and we are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you.”
The hacking incident comes just 24 hours after the NBS released a critical report detailing crime experiences and security perceptions across Nigeria.
Key Findings of the NBS Report
According to the report, Nigerians paid a staggering N2.23 trillion in ransom for kidnappings between May 2023 and April 2024. It also estimated that approximately 51.89 million crime incidents were recorded nationwide during the same period.
The report highlighted regional differences in crime rates, noting that:
- The northwest region recorded the highest number of crime incidents, with over 14 million cases.
- The southeast had the lowest, with slightly over six million cases.
- Crime rates in rural areas (26,526,069 incidents) exceeded those in urban areas (25,360,963 incidents).
Efforts to restore the NBS website are ongoing, with the agency urging patience and vigilance from the public.
