Ifeanyi Ubah: Senate denies claims of abandoning member

The Senate has dismissed allegations that it failed to honor its late member, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, during his burial rites. Reports had circulated claiming lawmakers did not attend the burial ceremony held in his hometown of Nnewi, Anambra State, but photographs from the event showed the presence of senators, including Minority Whip Osita Ngwu, former Minority Leader Enyinnaya Abaribe, Osita Izunaso, and Tony Nwoye, among others.

Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, described these claims as “untrue and misleading.” He emphasized that the Senate accorded Ubah all honors befitting a sitting member, including dedicating an entire legislative day to his memory—a first in the history of the National Assembly. Ubah’s seat was adorned with the national flag as a mark of respect for his contributions to the Senate and his constituency.

Adaramodu highlighted the Senate’s extensive support for the late senator’s family and community since his passing. He noted that Senate President Godswill Akpabio led a delegation of principal officers and senators to Ubah’s Lagos residence to console his wife and children. Additionally, nearly 100 senators attended a valedictory session in Ubah’s honor, where Vice President Kashim Shettima and other lawmakers paid glowing tributes to his legacy as a philanthropist, businessman, and politician.

Adaramodu also pointed out that a significant number of senators were present at Ubah’s burial in Nnewi and that the Senate had consistently reached out to his family. He dismissed accusations of neglect as baseless, stating, “The suggestion that the Senate failed in its role is preposterous. Those behind such narratives may have expected a spectacle instead of dignified mourning for our colleague’s untimely demise.”

The Senate reiterated its commitment to preserving Ubah’s memory and urged the public to disregard any misleading reports suggesting otherwise.
