Insecurity: Gov Ododo convenes emergency to address alleged killing of Fulani

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State has taken decisive steps to restore peace and security in Isanlu, Yagba East Local Government Area, following allegations by Fulani settlers that one of their members was killed by local indigenes. In response, the Governor convened an emergency security meeting in Lokoja, bringing together representatives of the Isanlu community and the Fulani settlers to address the rising tension and prevent potential reprisal attacks that could destabilize the area.

A statement issued on Monday by the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed that the meeting achieved its goal, as both parties agreed to embrace peace. Governor Ododo, who interrupted a trip to Abuja to receive an award, returned to Kogi State to address the escalating security concerns in Isanlu.

During the meeting, the Governor expressed his disapproval of individuals taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing that such actions are unacceptable and that those responsible for any violence would face legal consequences. He also directed that certain traditional rulers in the affected areas be interrogated to uncover the root causes of the conflict. One traditional ruler was suspended due to their alleged involvement in the incident.

The Governor urged leaders of the Isanlu community to caution their people against actions that could threaten security in Yagba East and the broader Yagba Federal Constituency. He called on them to identify and expose criminal elements within their communities, warning that his administration would not tolerate any form of criminality, regardless of tribal affiliation.

Governor Ododo commended the Fulani settlers for refraining from retaliatory actions, acknowledging their maturity and commitment to peace. He also thanked the leadership of the Fulani community for supporting the state’s security initiatives, noting their documented efforts to maintain peace and security.

The emergency meeting was attended by top government officials, security agencies, community leaders, and representatives of the Fulani settlers. The Chairman of Yagba East Local Government Area, Hon. Dare Joshua, expressed gratitude to the Governor for his swift intervention, which he said prevented a major security crisis in the area.
