INTERPOL Summons Ibadan-Based Broadcaster Over Alleged Defamation

The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has summoned Peter Olasupo, a broadcaster based in Ibadan, to its office over allegations of criminal defamation and cyberstalking.

Olasupo is expected to appear at INTERPOL’s headquarters in Abuja on Monday, January 13, 2025.

The broadcaster confirmed the invitation in a statement posted on his Facebook page, which was obtained by DAILY POST on Sunday.

In his statement, Olasupo disclosed that he initially received the invitation letter on December 30, 2024. The letter requested him to report to INTERPOL’s headquarters at Force Headquarters, Shehu Shagari Way, Garki, Abuja, at 11:00 am.

Upon receiving the letter through his boss, Olasupo’s employer immediately contacted a lawyer, Barrister Yomi Ogunlola, who responded on his behalf. The appearance was subsequently rescheduled for January 13, 2025.

Broadcaster Denies Allegations

Olasupo expressed confusion and curiosity about the allegations in his statement, maintaining his innocence.

“I recently received a letter with the headline Investigation Activities/Invitation Letter from INTERPOL, informing me of an investigation into allegations of criminal defamation and cyberstalking involving me. I have so many questions: Who reported me to INTERPOL? Why INTERPOL? Who is defaming who? And who is cyberstalking who? My Lord, I am innocent of these allegations,” Olasupo said.

He added, “At the moment, I don’t have full details of the matter, but I will present myself at their office and fully cooperate with INTERPOL’s investigation. However, I am curious—why must I report to the Abuja office? Why can’t I report to the Nigeria Police Headquarters in Oyo State Command, Eleyele, Ibadan, or even their Lagos office, which would be easier for me to reach by train?”

Concerns Over Logistics

Olasupo also raised concerns about the financial and logistical challenges of traveling to Abuja for the investigation.

“INTERPOL, if you truly want to facilitate this process, shouldn’t you at least provide travel allowances? Or will you use a police helicopter to carry me? Traveling by air is costly these days, and traveling by road has its risks. Yet, here I am being summoned to Abuja. Nonetheless, I will do what is required,” he said.

Commitment to Truth

The broadcaster reassured his followers that the situation would not affect his professionalism or dedication to his work.

“To my fans, please know that this will not affect my dedication to doing the right thing or my professionalism, which you all know me for. I remain committed to speaking the truth to those in power,” Olasupo concluded.
