IPOB leader Simon Ekpa arrested in Finland

Leader of  proscribed militant group Indegenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Simon Ekpa, has been confirmed to have been arrested in Finland by Finish police.

Local Finland authorities confirmed , the District Court of Päijät-Häme has sent Ekpa, who is Lahti-Nigerian municipal politician, was arrested on grounds of probable cause and on suspicion of publicly inciting crime with  terrorist intent.

Simon Ekpa is allegedly spreading separatist propaganda on social media that can incite public unrest and must be contained

This crime is said to have been committed on the 23rd of August 2021 and has been tried in the Lahti district.

Additionally, the Finish National Bureau of Investigation has immediately demanded the arrest of four others on suspicion of terror and other related crimes.

Simon Ekpa who is a 39 years old Nigerian and also a Finish citizen who is the leader of the separatist group IPOB in Nigeria, Finish police confirm Ekpa was arrested because it’s believed that he is promoting is agitations which has led to violence in the south eastern part of Nigeria and has also led to related crimes against the government of Nigeria.

Detective Chief Inspector Otto Hiltunen of di National Bureau of Investigation confirmed Ekpa carries out his activities on social media and has released several videos inciting the use of violence, making reference to a video Ekpa released in 2023 before the general elections where he was quoted to have said

“I condone violence against Nigerian government forces. It is a matter of self-defence. They are constantly attacking us and they have committed numerous war crimes against us. We are forced to defend ourselves.”
