Just In: Ex-Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello surrenders to EFCC

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has finally surrendered himself and appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with allegations of misappropriation of public funds. The former governor arrived at the EFCC’s office on Tuesday morning, accompanied by his legal team.

Bello’s visit comes in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling that upheld the constitutionality of the EFCC’s mandate to investigate financial crimes, quashing challenges raised by some states. The former governor drove himself to the EFCC office in a black Hilux vehicle, accompanied by his lawyers.

Speculations about his visit had circulated last week, though inquiries made to his media aides went unanswered. This latest appearance follows the EFCC’s recent court proceedings on fresh charges against Bello.

At a hearing on November 14 before Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, the EFCC requested an adjournment in the case. The commission cited the 30-day window required for the summons issued to Bello to remain valid.

While the EFCC has granted administrative bail to Bello’s co-defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, the agency sought additional time for Bello’s formal court appearance. The case is scheduled to resume tomorrow, November 27, for further proceedings.
