Kwara Government demotes Teacher for Assaulting NYSC Member

The Kwara State Government has taken disciplinary action against a teacher at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin, for assaulting a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.

The incident occurred when the corps member visited the school to collect her clearance letter. According to reports, the teacher accused her of “not greeting properly” and subsequently assaulted her, tearing her clothes. This raised concerns about the safety of corps members serving in the state.

The NYSC’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Carol Lembu, confirmed the matter is being addressed, adding that the corps member would be reposted to another school for her safety.

An investigation by the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) revealed that the teacher, identified as Hamzat Fatimoh Nike, was guilty of unprofessional conduct. A statement from TESCOM Press Secretary Sam Bola Onile outlined her offenses, including fighting on duty, use of foul language, insubordination, and disrespect for the NYSC uniform, which represents national identity.

As a result, the teacher has been demoted by two grade levels, transferred out of her current school, and will undergo mandatory counseling.

The government, in a joint statement by the Commissioner for Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, and TESCOM Chairman, Mallam Bello Tauheed Abubakar, condemned the incident, stating it contravenes public service rules.

They reassured the NYSC management and the public that such behavior does not reflect the values of the state and promised it would not be repeated. Teachers were urged to uphold professionalism and abide by teaching ethics, as the state remains committed to training and enforcing proper service procedures.
