The Lagos State government has refuted claims that it has imposed a ban on sachet water. The clarification was made by the state’s Minister of the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement on Sunday shared via his official X account.
This response follows the circulation of a viral video showing enforcement officers destroying packs of sachet water in Lagos. Wahab clarified that the individuals in the video were not from any Lagos State agency but were instead officers of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
He explained that NAFDAC’s actions were part of its lawful responsibility to eliminate unregistered and unsafe products, ensuring public health and safety.
Wahab emphasized that Lagos State has not banned sachet water, nor does it intend to do so.
He further stated that the government’s focus remains on managing plastic waste, particularly through the implementation of mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for producers of products like sachets, carrier bags, and PET materials with a thickness of at least 40 microns.
