Magistrates Begin Indefinite Strike in Cross river, Shut Down courts

The Magistrates Association of Nigeria (MAN), Cross River State chapter, has announced an indefinite strike beginning Monday, December 9, 2024, directing all magistrate courts in the state to shut down.

The association’s chairman, Godwin Onah, and secretary, Solomon Abuo, issued a notice on Sunday, mandating all magistrates to comply strictly with the directive.

The statement read, “All magistrates must adhere to this Bulletin No. 2 by abstaining from performing all official duties, including court sittings, starting Monday, December 9, 2024, until further notice.”

The indefinite strike follows a series of unaddressed demands made to the Cross River State Government. MAN previously issued a communiqué on November 5, 2024, listing eight demands, including improved working conditions and other grievances.

Despite extending a notice of strike to November 22, 2024, and observing a warning strike from November 27 to November 29, the state government failed to respond or initiate negotiations.

“In view of Bulletin No. 1 dated November 27, 2024, and the lack of action from the Cross River State Government to address our demands or commence negotiations, we are compelled to embark on an indefinite strike until our concerns are resolved,” the notice added.

The strike is expected to paralyze judicial activities in magistrate courts across the state, as members have vowed not to return to work until their demands are fully met.
