The traditional ruler of Okai Item in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, Eze James Ogbonnaya, has called on Governor Alex Otti to address a brewing crisis in his community.
Speaking to journalists in Umuahia on Tuesday alongside his Prime Minister, Eze Ogbonnaya alleged that some thugs loyal to Methodist Church Bishop, Rt. Rev. Sunday Onuoha, were harassing him and other community members. He claimed his role as the traditional ruler had been undermined by certain individuals in the community.
The monarch further alleged that efforts were underway to install a factional traditional ruler in Okai Item, escalating tensions in the area.
“I appeal to Governor Alex Otti and the Methodist Prelate to intervene and save my community from a major crisis. My life is now in danger. I am afraid of these people,” he said.
Eze Ogbonnaya also denied allegations that he protected a pastor involved in alleged homosexual activities. He clarified that the pastor had been expelled from the community immediately after the issue arose.
Similarly, the Prime Minister of Okai Item, Igwe Kalu, alleged threats to his life and that of his elderly parents. Kalu, a traditionalist and youth leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), claimed he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on December 29. According to him, thugs stormed his home at 1 a.m., destroying his property, including several economic trees.
He also called on Governor Otti and security agencies to ensure his safety, emphasizing the seriousness of the threats.
In response to the allegations, Bishop Sunday Onuoha dismissed the claims, describing them as “expired lies” and “laughable.” He added that anyone familiar with his personality would know the accusations were baseless.
