The long-neglected Port Harcourt-Owerri Road, a key route connecting the South-South to the eastern region, is finally receiving attention from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
This intervention follows a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging the agency to address the dilapidated state of critical roads in the Niger Delta region.
Rehabilitation work has already commenced, earning praise from commuters who described the move as timely, especially with increased travel expected during the Christmas season. Kingsley Okorigwe, a commercial bus driver who plies the route, commended the NDDC for responding to the repeated distress calls of road users suffering from the road’s poor condition.
The Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, recently inspected ongoing repair work on the failed sections of the road between Umuapu and Umuagwo in Imo State. He noted that the deplorable state of the road necessitated the Commission’s emergency intervention to make it motorable once again. During the visit, engineers from the construction firm handling the project briefed the NDDC team on the progress made so far.
Ogbuku expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for prioritizing the restoration of key infrastructure in the region. He highlighted the importance of this intervention, stating, “Following a presidential directive to urgently address the deteriorated sections of regional roads, the NDDC has swiftly mobilized contractors to carry out remedial works, ensuring that commuters do not endure unnecessary hardship while traveling.”
The NDDC chief emphasized that the Commission is committed to supporting both federal and state governments in alleviating the challenges faced by road users in the Niger Delta. He assured the public of the project’s durability, commending the contractor for the quality of work being delivered and their commitment to completing the repairs promptly.
Ogbuku also called on local communities and commuters to remain patient and cooperative as the project progresses. He reaffirmed the Commission’s determination to complete the repairs quickly and efficiently to restore ease of travel and connectivity on this vital road.
